Favicons are used by web browsers on tabs, bookmarks, and elsewhere which help visually identify a website. WordPress makes it easy to add a site icon, which acts the same as a favicon. Adding a favicon as a site icon is much easier than generating a favicon.ico file, which is the standard file type for favicons.
Important: In order to use the site icon feature, your image must be square and at least 512 pixels in height and width. The image can be a .jpg, .gif, or .png file type.
