When you have online processing for your store, it'll be set up (by default) to obtain an authorization of the credit card the customer is using before the order will be allowed to proceed.
The payment processor uses AVS (address verification system) to make sure the billing address entered by the customer matches the information on file for the card he/she is using. AVS checking is only available with the following credit card types:
- Visa
- MasterCard
- American Express
- Discover Card
First Data Merchant Services (FDMS) doesn't support AVS for other card types at this time.
A failed AVS check in itself will not prevent the order from being placed. You'll be able to see the AVS information for a given order in the Order Manager in Store Manager.
The AVS information will only indicate whether the address and the ZIP/Postal code entered for the billing information matches a check of that information as reported by the credit card company. This doesn't mean the card is invalid; it only means that the data entered doesn't match the most current data the credit card company has for that card. You'll need to contact your merchant account provider for advice regarding further interpretation of an AVS result.
Whether you use online processing or not, the store software has additional features that help you reduce the likelihood that you'll become a victim of credit card fraud. Learn more about reducing fraud and Risk Tools.
