We serve website content from multiple data centers, which requires the use of multiple different IP addresses for customers managing their DNS outside of Turbify and pointing traffic back to us via A record. We do this to ensure site availability during the following situations:
- Planned system maintenance periods, when traffic is purposely shifted away from a data center.
- Unplanned outages, such as emergency maintenance.
- System outages caused by natural disasters or other emergency situations.
Turbify cannot automatically direct traffic for externally hosted domains to the correct location during the types of events listed above. If you are using a domain hosted outside of Turbify to point to your website, you must plan for events such as these, and proactively take steps to help route traffic to your site should such a situation occur.
What steps do I need to take?
We strongly recommend redelegating your domain to Turbify. Domain redelegation is the only action that will ensure traffic is served to your site, should we need to shift traffic away from a specific data center. Continuing to manage your domain outside of Turbify will result in your site being unavailable to some visitors during the types of events listed above.
If you do not redelegate your domain to Turbify, you must take all of the following actions to minimize traffic loss during these events:
-
Set the lowest TTL (time to live) allowed by your domain host. Since merchants with domains hosted outside of Turbify must manually point to the correct IP address during any outage, this allows A record changes to take effect as quickly as possible in the event only one data center is active.
-
Ensure that the A records for your root domain (e.g., your-website-here.net) includes your Shared IP Address in cPanel's General Information section:
Since your domain is managed outside of Turbify, changes to A records must be made through your domain provider. In most cases, you will be able to log in to the site used to manage your domain, and can enter the domain management area to add or modify A records.
What if I don't change my domain settings?
If you do not wish to take any of the actions outlined in this article at this time, we strongly recommend that you have a plan in place for handling the above situations. This plan should include:
-
Confirm IP address(es) to which traffic should be routed. This information may at times be available on the System Status page. If it is not posted, it is your responsibility to contact Turbify. When contacting our support, please be aware that our ability to assist you may be limited.
-
Contact your domain provider to make the changes we've outlined, or access your domain settings to make these changes yourself. Please note that changes can take anywhere from several minutes to several days to take effect, depending on your domain provider's settings.
Turbify cannot take these steps for you, nor can we provide you with contact information for your domain provider.
